Medicinal leeches

We can provide you with medicinal leeches

Leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) are mainly used in naturopathy, such as bruises, haematomas, venous diseases and joint wear. Trauma surgeons also swear by these handy helpers as leeches can even help save severed body parts. Our leeches are safe and are bred in Germany.

These bloodsuckers’ healing powers stem rom their saliva. Various substances are introduced into the bloodstream in the course of the suction process. These substances are credited with anti-inflammatory, circulation-enhancing, pain-relieving and vasodilating effects.

  • In a clean container with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Clean, chlorine-free, soft tap water or non-carbonated mineral water.
  • Rinse every 2 days or when cloudy.
  • Keep vessel in a cool, dark place between 5 and 18 degrees.
  • Cool storage reduces germ colonisation.
  • It is normal for the mucus cover to be removed every 2 to 3 days. It helps the leeches if you lay sharp-edged stones out on the bottom of the vessel.

Leeches’ lifespan depends on how well they are looked after. When stored as described above, they can be stored safely for 7 days.

When stored in the dispensing jar, their lifespan is around 4 days (at 6 to 18 degrees).

Dispose of the leeches after use.

Safe killing: Freeze the leeches at -18 degrees (at least 12 hours).
In case of small quantities, you can dispose of leeches via household waste (residual waste).

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding disposal or having the manufacturer collect them.

Animals can also be treated with leeches. Consult your veterinarian about this.

Most veterinary experience in treatment with leeches has been on horses, dogs and cats.
